1. Your bike should always be safely locked
Some thieves are very quick! Always lock your bike, even for a short stop
2. Lock your bike to an immovable object
Whenever you leave your bike in a public place. Remember to lock your bicycle to a fixed, immovable object (preferably a bike rack) this also applies to courtyards, bicycle storage rooms or cellars/basements accessible to other occupants.
This does not apply to private spaces that only you can access.
3. Use an insurance certified lock
Please follow the guidelines provided by any of these organisations in order to comply to insurance standards:

We recommend the U-shaped locks which are more resistant.
4. Keep your lock off the ground
The floor can be used for extra-leverage, or as a hard surface to smash your lock against (using a hammer or any other tool) in order to steal your beloved bicycle
5. Choose a busy place
Secluded places such as a narrow, dark alley will give potential thieves more time and privacy to operate.
6. Favour several locks if possible
The idea of using several locks to secure your bicycle is to make your bike appear harder to steal. Always favour U-shaped locks in addition to other locks, such as a chain.
Don’t lose sleep at the idea of leaving your bike outside overnight, insure it and it will be replaced in case it gets stolen.
